Erica Villarreal, a self-taught artist from Northern California, was born in Hayward and moved to Tracy at the age of five. As the eldest of five children growing up in a Mexican-American household, Erica’s upbringing was rich in culture but layered with challenges.
A profound turning point in Erica's life came at the age of eight when her youngest brother passed away—a tragedy that deeply impacted her family. Out of this heartbreak grew Erica’s love for art and music, which became her therapy and a powerful way to express her emotions.
Always a creative spirit, Erica’s artistic journey began early. Her talent was first recognized in the 4th grade during an art lesson contest, where her work earned her a prized set of Mr. Sketch markers. This small victory marked the start of her self-guided exploration of various art forms. Over the years, Erica taught herself a wide range of creative skills, including jewelry making, creating homemade greeting cards, sewing one-of-a-kind purses and shirts, and designing graphics.
Erica embraces a colorful and vibrant lifestyle. She has a passion for collecting records, thrifting unique pieces, and indulging in theater and movies. Cooking is another creative outlet she loves, allowing her to share her artistry in the kitchen.
During high school, Erica returned to the Bay Area to live with her grandparents in Union City CA. She graduated from high school with a focus on Electronic Media Productions, specializing in video and media platforms, which further ignited her creative passions. Erica went on to achieve a significant milestone as the first in her family to graduate from college. She earned an Associate degree in Graphic Arts and a Bachelor's degree in Visual Communications, all while balancing full-time work and full-time studies—a testament to her dedication and a source of immense pride. Throughout middle school and high school, Erica's passion for art and community flourished. Participation in her school's MEChA club, along with her love for graphic design and theater, helped shape her identity as an artist and fierce community advocate.
Erica is also deeply committed to giving back to her community. She has volunteered at the Manteca Boys and Girls Club, teaching children how to paint and educating them about the holiday of Día de los Muertos. This passion project is inspired by her work with children and her belief that creativity saves lives by empowering individuals to embrace their uniqueness. For Erica, nurturing creativity is a way to inspire the next generation and instill a sense of individuality and cultural pride.
Today, Erica serves as the Marketing and Community Outreach Manager for her local community, where she is dedicated to teaching children how to stay safe and live meaningful lives. Her family, boyfriend, cherished relationships, and her beloved dog, Rocko, are the core of Erica’s heart/world. She values these connections immensely and deeply, often sharing and celebrating them whenever she can.
For Erica, art is not just an expression but a reflection of love and passion—a way to connect, heal, and inspire.
